Tornado Alley Armor Safe Rooms are built to exceed FEMA 320 guidelines for safe room construction. They have been successfully impact tested by the punishing “2×4 cannon” operated by the Wind Science and Energy Research Center at Texas Tech University. This device shoots multiple 15 lb. 2×4’s at 100 mph (the same speed debris flys out of an EF5 tornado) at the safe room walls and door. Our safe rooms are not “over-engineered” like many competing brands adding unnecessary bulk, labor and other costs, but rather properly engineered to withstand multiple simulated debris impacts consistent with an EF5-rated tornado packing 250 mph winds. Our panels absorb the blows and remain intact with the occupants safely inside. (FYI – Real-life tornado debris travels slower than the actual wind speeds, and the 100 mph test criteria has a very conservative safety factor built into the calculation)
